Seussical
2010 Summer Musical
Big Deal Productions proudly presents “Seussical” as its annual summer musical this year. The production will be Directed and Choreographed by Debra Goldman, with Music Direction by Ken Preuss. One of the most widely performed shows in the country, “Seussical” is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza based on the collected works of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. But it isn’t just a string of his stories set to music. And it isn’t just a retelling of one of his stories. “Seussical” is an entirely new, full length musical created by the Tony Award winning, Broadway writing team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (“Ragtime,” “Once On This Island”).
“I can see that you’ve got quite a mind for your age!
Why, one Think and you dragged me right onto the stage!
Now, I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue
With a Cat such as me, and a Thinker like you!”
So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of this engaging story that weaves together many favorite Dr. Seuss characters, creatures, places and things. The classic, colorful tales are seamlessly brought together by Jojo, a child and “thinker of strange and wonderful thinks.” As the story unfolds you will marvel at how relevant and profound Dr. Seuss’s subtle themes really are; making this a show that will certainly appeal to all ages. While children undoubtedly will thrill to see familiar Dr. Seuss characters, adults will also enjoy a surprisingly sophisticated Broadway musical. The score emerges as a beguiling, Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk! So let your toes tap, your fingers snap, and your imagination run wild, for:
“If you open your mind,
Oh, the Thinks you will find
Lining up to get loose!
Oh, the Thinks you can think!
Oh, the Thinks you can think
When you think about Seuss!!”
Performances will take place at Stevenson High School and are scheduled for July 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m., and July 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets provide for general admission to any one of the performances. All tickets for children ages 5 and under are $5. All other tickets will be $15 in advance, or $18 at the door. Tickets can be purchased during regular business hours at the Alcott Center in Buffalo Grove, or by calling the Producer, Lindsay Grandt, at (847) 850-2132.
